A twenty one inch woofer changes things before it makes a sound. The crate gets bigger, the pallet count drops, and the freight line on your quote moves. We keep seeing the same sequence. A cabinet builder runs an eighteen for a few years, gets asked for more low end in a tighter footprint, and starts looking at a twenty one. The motor we build for that job is the H-21FW601ND, and you can see the whole sheet on our 21 inch woofer driver page. It’s a 21 inch cone, a neodymium motor, a 6 inch coil and a double spider, rated 3000 to 6000W into 8 ohms at 98.5 dB across 25 to 1000 Hz. What that means for your box is a longer conversation than the four numbers suggest.
Twenty one inches changes the crate
Start with the thing nobody prints on a data sheet. A 21 inch frame is wider across the flange than an 18, and the motor sitting behind it takes more depth. Stack that up over a pallet and you’ll ship fewer units per cubic metre than you’re used to, so the freight part of your quote moves even when the driver doesn’t. It isn’t a reason to avoid the size. It’s a reason to raise it early, before a distributor books a truck around a count they took from an eighteen inch drawing. If you’re ordering Yinyu stands and Yinyu cables alongside the drivers, say so at the same time and we’ll plan one container around all of it.

Six inch coil, wound in and out
The coil on this one is 6 inch, and our sheet lists it as GBF in and out. That matters because an inside and outside wound coil puts wire on both faces of the former, so heat has two ways out of the gap instead of one. On a driver that’s asked to move this much air, that’s the difference between a coil that survives a long set and one that goes soft halfway through it. It adds moving mass too, which is part of why a twenty one doesn’t behave like a big eighteen in the midband. If you’re reading this with a drawing on your desk, you can skip the rest and go straight to the contact page on our site and send it over. Most of what follows gets answered by the drawing rather than by the text.

Where neodymium pays for itself
Neodymium is the motor material here, and the reason is weight, not output. A ferrite motor that would hold the same gap on a driver this size would put the cabinet over what two people want to lift, and the people carrying it are the ones who’ll tell you. Neo keeps the box manageable, which is why it turns up on touring stock. It costs more than ferrite and we won’t pretend otherwise. If you’re building for a fixed install where nobody lifts it, say so and we’ll talk about what changes. The 18 inch high power subwoofer we build sits in the same catalogue and gets the same question.
Right. It’s a big cone.
Two spiders, one cone
There are two spiders on this driver instead of one. On a cone this wide, a single spider lets the assembly rock at the bottom of its travel, and rocking is what turns into a rubbed coil a season later. Two spiders hold the former on a longer line and keep the excursion straight. You can see it if you take the driver out of the box and look underneath, and it’s one of the first things we’d point at if you asked why the part costs what it does.
Twenty five hertz in a real room
The low figure on the sheet is 25 Hz, and you should read it as a driver number rather than a cabinet number. What your box does down there depends on the volume behind the cone, the tuning, and whether the room is helping. A twenty one will load differently in a small room than the same driver in a big one, and the port you cut for an eighteen won’t be the port this one wants. If you’re designing now, give us the internal volume and the tuning you have in mind and we’ll tell you where it lands before you cut wood.
What 98.5 dB hides
Ninety eight point five decibels is measured under our conditions, and your cabinet won’t be our conditions. A sensitivity figure takes one watt at one metre on a baffle, and a baffle is a flat board that behaves nothing like a vented enclosure. The number is still useful. It lets you compare two drivers measured the same way. It doesn’t let you predict what your box will do at the back of a room, and anyone who tells you it does is selling something.

Chrome yoke and the heat path
The magnet shell is a chrome yoke. That’s partly finish and partly function, since the yoke is one of the routes the heat takes out of the motor. On a driver meant to sit in a cabinet and work for hours, that path is a design job and not a decoration. If you’re putting these into a sealed box with no air behind the motor, mention it. We’ve had that conversation more than once and it’s better had before the build than after the first one comes back.
Fitting one to your cabinet
Most people who ask about a twenty one already build an eighteen. The baffle cut is the obvious difference. The ones that catch people are the depth behind the baffle, the brace you’ll need across the mouth, and the handles you’ll move because the motor took the space. Bracing matters more at this size, since the front panel is being pushed by a cone with a lot of area and it’ll tell you if it’s thin. The pole cup, the castor board and the Yinyu stands that end up under the top cabinet are all part of the same job, and they move when the cabinet does. We build a crank up subwoofer pole that fits these cabinets, and it’s worth specifying in the same email.
Send us a drawing if you have one. We’ll mark what we’d change.
Before we can quote it
Four things and we can usually say whether this is the right driver.
- The internal volume you’ve got, and whether the box is vented
- The crossover point, and what’s sitting above it
- What the cabinet is for: touring, install, or a wedge that gets stood on
- The quantity, and whether this is a one off or a programme
With those four we can tell you if the H-21FW601ND fits, and if it doesn’t we’ll say that instead of selling you into a problem. If you’d rather skip the form, send a drawing of the box you build now and we’ll read it.
Sharing the container
This driver doesn’t travel alone in most of our orders. A pallet of twenty one inch motors is heavy, and what rides beside it gets picked for how it fills the space. Yinyu cables are small and dense, so they fill the gaps a speaker pallet leaves. Yinyu stands take up a lot of volume for their weight and stack above. Audfine headphones go in last, in the dry part of the container near the door. It’s all built by Ningbo Lesound Electronics on the same benches, which is why one booking covers the lot.

Questions before a twenty one inch order
Does it need its own amp channel?
It’ll run off the same channel as your tops if the crossover is doing its job, but most people driving a twenty one hard end up giving it its own amplifier. It’s an 8 ohm driver, so two in parallel present 4 ohms, which most modern amplifiers handle and not all of them do. Tell us what you’re using and we’ll tell you if it’s comfortable.
Can we get this in 4 ohm?
This one is built at 8 ohms. A 4 ohm version is a different wind, and it changes the coil, so it isn’t a small tweak. If your system wants four ohms, tell us at the enquiry and we’ll see what’s possible at your quantity.
Will the cone sag in storage?
Paper moves with humidity, and a cone this size has a lot of area to move. Store cabinets with the driver facing up, or in the position it’ll be used in, and don’t stack anything on the cone. We’ve seen cones go out of shape in a warehouse rather than on a stage, and it’s avoidable.
Does neodymium fade when hot?
Neo loses strength at a lower temperature than ferrite, and a driver worked hard in a hot cabinet gets hot. The design keeps the motor inside its range, but if your boxes sit in direct sun on a festival site, tell us. It changes what we’d recommend and it’s cheaper to talk about now.
Can you ship recone kits?
We can, and at this size it’s worth planning. A recone on a twenty one isn’t a short job, and the kit takes volume in the crate. Ask for the kits with the drivers rather than after them, otherwise you’ll pay to ship air twice.
What do you need to quote one?
A drawing of your cabinet, or the internal volume and tuning if you don’t have one, plus the crossover point and the quantity. That’s enough to start. If you only have a rough idea, send what you’ve got and we’ll ask for the rest.
A twenty one is a commitment in a way an eighteen isn’t, and most of that sits outside the driver. The crate, the bracing, the amplifier and the port all move when you change size. We build the motor, we know what it asks of a cabinet, and we’d rather talk you out of it than sell you one that doesn’t fit. Put 21 inch woofer in the message and it’ll reach the right desk, or come in through the contact page on our site and we’ll pick it up there.
