Power handling – the real story
The H-18PD500C handles 2000 watts continuous and 4000 watts peak. That's not a made-up number. We test every batch on a bench with real amplifiers pushing real signal. We run them at full power for hours to make sure they don't cook.
The secret is that 5-inch GBF voice coil. Most 18-inch drivers use a 3-inch or 4-inch coil. A 5-inch coil has more surface area for heat to escape. When you're running a subwoofer hard, the voice coil gets hot. If heat can't escape, the coil expands, the glue softens, and eventually the driver fails. That's what was happening to my customer in Texas. His old drivers had small coils, and they were cooking themselves.
With a 5-inch inside/outside winding, the coil dissipates heat much more efficiently. That means less power compression. Power compression is when the driver gets hot and loses efficiency. You turn up the amp, but the speaker doesn't get louder because the coil resistance goes up. With our driver, you don't get that. It stays efficient even when it's hot.
The ferrite magnet – why not neodymium?
Some people ask me, "Why aren't you using neodymium magnets?" Good question. Neodymium is lighter, and that's great for portable speakers. But ferrite has a big advantage: thermal stability. When neodymium gets hot, it starts to lose its magnetic strength permanently. Ferrite doesn't. It holds its magnetism even at high temperatures.
For a subwoofer that's going to live in a cabinet and not need to be carried up stairs every day, ferrite is often the better choice. It's heavier, but it's more reliable in the long run. And because it's less expensive than neodymium, we can pass those savings on to you.
One customer in Germany runs a nightclub with four dual-18 subwoofers loaded with our drivers. The subs are on the dance floor, and they run for six hours a night, five nights a week. After a year, he pulled one driver to check it. The magnet was fine. The coil was fine. Everything was fine.
The build – what you can't see
There are some things about this driver that you won't find in a spec sheet, but they make a big difference.
Die-cast aluminum basket. If you compare a cast basket to a stamped steel basket side by side, the difference is obvious. Stamped steel flexes. You can twist it with your hands. Cast aluminum is rigid. When the driver is moving at high excursion, the basket doesn't deform. The voice coil stays perfectly aligned in the magnetic gap. No rub, no distortion, no premature failure.
Carbon fiber cone. Paper cones are cheaper, but they absorb moisture from the air. Over time, they get heavier and less stiff. Carbon fiber doesn't absorb moisture. It stays stiff and light for the life of the driver. That means consistent performance over years, not months.
Double spider. The spider is the part that centers the voice coil. In most drivers, there's only one. If you push the driver hard, a single spider can struggle to keep the coil centered. Two spiders work together to keep everything aligned. This is especially important when the driver is operating at high power and high excursion. Less off-axis movement means lower distortion.
Chrome T-yoke. The yoke is the part of the magnetic circuit that directs magnetic flux. A T-yoke shape focuses the magnetic energy into the gap where the voice coil sits. More magnetic energy in the gap equals higher sensitivity and better control. The chrome plating is just a nice touch – it resists corrosion and looks good.
What customers ask me all the time

Q: "How does this compare to Eminence or B&C?"
